Scottish Rifles and became part of the Union Volunteer Regiment in 1897. The Scottish Rifles became a separate regiment in 1901 as the 5th N. S. W. Infantry Regiment (Scottish Rifles) and formed into two battalions in 1903 and again known as the Scottish Rifles. In 1912, both battalions were drafted into the 16th and 25th Infantry and then four of the companies given to the 25th were split off
