The mayor of Chicago at the time was Edward Joseph Kelly, who served from 1933 to 1947. Following the death of mayor Anton Cermak, Patrick Nash, a friend of Kelly's, picked him for the mayor election. Together they created a political machine known as the Kelly Nash Machine.
