The medal is bronze and is marked on the obverse side as The First Defenders, and the middle of the medal reads First in Defence of the Capital, April 18, 1861, and features an etching of the U. S. Capital. The reverse is marked as being awarded to George Shartle of the Ringgold Light Infantry. This medal was awarded to the "first defenders"
